#DestinationSpain: A Guide to the Maresme

The Maresme region covers a narrow strip of land in the north east of Catalonia, between Barcelona and the Costa Brava. The region is made up of 30 towns, 16 of which are on the coast, with a total population of around 440,000 inhabitants and 52km of coastline between Montgat (to the south) and Malgrat de Mar (to the north). The capital of Maresme is Mataró, with around 125,000 inhabitants. The region is known for its unique traditions, history and fine local cuisine and has a distinctive landscape where the mountains and vineyards meet the beaches of the Mediterranean. The area offers the best of both mountain pursuits and water sports. Maresme boasts golden sandy beaches interspersed with small coves to form an idyllic landscape with warm, dry summers and mild, bright winters. Just 15 minutes north of Barcelona, discover the history of the region’s towns and people and savour its local cuisine and fine wines.

Beaches

The coastline offers 49 golden sandy beaches (with medium to coarse sand), forming 37km of seafront. These vary from long, wide sandy beaches to rocky coves with an average width of just 55m.

Tres Micos, Caldes d’Estrac

Caldes d'Estrac

This beach is near a small hill with a woodland area, with many hiking paths beginning and ending here. There is a map detailing various routes to neighbouring villages. The beach itself is 370m long and 78m wide, with a mix of pebbles and golden sand. Nearby parking provides easy access. It is possible to rent kayaks, and there is a quaint chiringuito (beach bar) for a refreshing beverage in the sun.

Canet de Mar

The long sandy beach of Canet remains relatively peaceful and calm, even during the summer months. There are good facilities such as showers, walkways and lifeguard services along its 1,600m length. There is a charming promenade which extends to a neighbouring beach.

Ocata

Screen shot 2015-07-31 at 11.52.21

Ocata beach is a wide, sandy beach just a 15 minute train journey from Arc de trionf station in Barelona. Despite its handy location, it never gets crowded (even in July and August). It is within walking distance of the Masnou port, with lovely bars and restaurants.

Sant Pol i Els Pescadors, Sant Pol de Mar

Due to its unique geography, the coast of San Pol is composed of several small rocky coves that set this spot apart from other towns in Maresme. The beaches of San Pol are clean with coarse sand and are set beneath dramatic cliffs. As the town’s main beach, there are many facilities and safety services.

Garbí i Gran, Calella

Parallel with the seafront promenade, this beach has been awarded a prestigious blue flag for the third time since 2006. This indicates that the beach is of a high environmental standard, as well as its compliance with healthy and safety measures.

La Riera i Els Pescadors, Pineda de Mar

Pineda de Mar

Pineda de Mar village is completely open to the sea. It has a 2,280m long sandy beach around 40m wide. This beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag certificate in recent years, for the quality of its sand and clean waters as well as nicely maintained facilities.

L’Astillero i Malgrat Centre, Malgrat de Mar

There are many hotels along this popular tourist beach. With a fun atmosphere, there are many bars and picnic areas for families. The beach facilities are well maintained and part of the sea is accessible for handicapped swimmers.
