Mallorca Celebrity Gossip: Rafa Nadal, Grace Kelly and Claudia Schiffer

Rafael Nadal escapes the limelight in tranquil Mallorca

The Balearic government recently approved plans for the construction of an International Tennis Centre in Manacor, Mallorca, in collaboration with Rafael Nadal, which will draw young tennis talents from all over the world. The native Mallorcan tennis star and 11-time grand slam champion has held the title of world No.1 since 2008. However, despite his rapid ascension to fame and continuing success, he remains one of the most down to earth sportsmen in the public eye. “Mallorca is my favourite place in the world, as I have my family and my friends there,” he told the Telegraph recently. His decision to remain living in his childhood home on the island is something of an anomaly in the glamorous world of sports stars (many of whom leave their respective hometowns in favour of tax havens). The athlete spends his periods of recovery at his beautiful home on the island; and with its natural beauty, favourable climate and delicious Mediterranean food, it is not hard to imagine why!

Grace Kelly Honeymooned in Mallorca

Synonymous with the glamour of the silver screen era, the iconic Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III spent part of their Mediterranean honeymoon at Hotel Formentor, in the secluded North of Mallorca, where they received a warm welcome from the Mayor of Palma and Mallorca’s civil governor. Throughout the 1930s and the 1950s, Hotel Formentor was the place to be, hosting other well-known guests such as Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, and artist Joan Miró as well as Hollywood stars Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers.

Lloyd Webber has described Mallorca as the gastronomic capital of the Med, with the “extraordinary hillside village of Deia at its centre”. He celebrated his 60th birthday on the island with some of the biggest names in showbusiness including close friends Michael Caine, Sir Tim Rice and Ben Elton.

Royal Summer Home in Mallorca

Overlooking the bay of Palma in Mallorca is Marivent Palace, the summer residence of the Spanish Royal Family. The palace has welcomed many royals and notable people through history, including Princess Diana with young Princes William and Harry whom holidayed with the King and Queen of Spain in 1987. More recently, U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and her younger daughter lunched with Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia at the royal summer residence during a holiday on the Balearic Island.

Mallorca is favourite holiday destination of supermodel Claudia Schiffer

International former supermodel Claudia Schiffer enjoyed holidays at her parents Mallorcan villa in Camp Del Mar as a child. The German supermodel reputedly owns a hillside villa of her own in the same region, where she regularly spends time with her own family. She has also worked with the Mallorca Tourist Board, promoting the island and its golf courses. According to popular belief, Schiffer was first discovered at a famous nightclub in Dusseldorf. However, she had formerly posed aged sixteen for local Mallorcan photographer, Pedro Coll.
